Managing heart disease with healthy behaviors and a healthy lifestyle. Anyone who
has experienced a cardiac hospitalization or emergency understands the motivating force
of fear. Often while still in their hospital beds, patients vow to lose weight, start
exercising, and eat healthier. But fear subsides and, too often, promises to change
don’t last.
Often when individuals are first referred to or learn about Cardium Health, they are
unsure of their future. They may not want to communicate the details of their condition
to family or friends because they do not want to worry those closest to them. They may
be embarrassed that they have not addressed the risk factors associated with heart disease
sooner including weight, diet, exercise, or tobacco dependency. Their cardiac event may
have been their first hospitalization and medications may be new. Patients receive information
in the hospital, but often feel bewildered because of the all the tests, the new terminology,
and the fatigue of sleeplessness during the hospitalization.
The Cardium Health multi-disciplinary counseling
model is one of hope, not fear. We help participants in our heast
disease management programs understand – often for
the first time – that they can feel better.
With a cardiac registered
nurse providing support,
participants are gently encouraged to adopt healthy behaviors. As they learn that coronary
arteries can become healthier, change becomes something that people want to do, not
just something that they have to do. And that leads to lasting better health.
